Vietfood & Beverage – Propack Vietnam 2024 – The 9th International Exhibition on Food, Beverage, and Packaging Technology – officially kicked off at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC), District 7, Ho Chi Minh City. The event, which ran from August 8 to 10, 2024, brought together 900 businesses from over 20 nations and drew tens of thousands of people each day.

With the participation of 900 domestic and international enterprises, the exhibition showcased a wide range of products across various fields, including food, beverages, ingredients, and food additives. In addition to processed food and beverages, Vietfood & Beverage – Propack Vietnam 2024 introduced numerous advanced technologies in the processing, packaging, and labeling sectors.

This year’s exhibition has significantly expanded in scale, with the number of booths increasing by 40% compared to 2023, covering a total exhibition area of 36,000 m². Each booth was uniquely decorated, reflecting the distinctive identity of each business and country. Notably, the series of booths from Russian and Korean enterprises stood out, reaffirming the exhibition’s status as Vietnam’s largest F&B event.

Globally, mycotoxin contamination is a significant issue. Over 25% of cereals around the world are affected by these toxins, with 80-100% of corn in the U.S. being contaminated by Fusarium toxins. In China, cereals like corn and rice are frequently contaminated by multiple types of mycotoxins.

Mycotoxins pose serious risks to both animal and human health. They cause abnormal biochemical changes in the body by interfering with RNA and protein synthesis, leading to early cell death, weakened immune systems, and even cancer.

Among these, aflatoxins are especially dangerous. They have high toxicity, disrupt liver cells and functions, and can potentially cause cancer. Symptoms of aflatoxin exposure are often noticeable in pigs and chickens, including loss of appetite, jaundice, motor dysfunction, diarrhea, stunted growth, and increased mortality.

Due to their high toxicity, China enforces strict standards on the allowable levels of fungi in raw materials. For instance, cereals and cereal products must have a total fungal count of less than 40,000 per gram, while fishmeal from meat and bone must be below 20,000 per gram. Common mycotoxins in stored products include aflatoxin, ochratoxin A, T-2 toxin, DON (vomitoxin), zearalenone, fumonisins, and citrinin.

To manage mycotoxin risks, several strategies are employed, including preventing contamination from raw materials, inhibiting growth during storage, detoxifying with chemical methods, and using adsorbents for removal. While mycotoxins may be an invisible threat, they pose serious risks and can significantly impact profitability in animal husbandry. Rigorous prevention and control measures are essential to ensure feed quality and safeguard animal health.

Mediterranean Port Congestion

One of the primary issues is the increased congestion at Mediterranean transshipment ports, such as Tangier-Med in Morocco and Algeciras in Spain. Another source of congestion is the diversions from the Red Sea, with many ports experiencing capacity issues and longer than normal wait times. The increased cargo volumes from the EU’s FuelEU Maritime Regulation are also straining these ports, causing shipping companies to adjust their operations to manage the high yard densities and extended wait times.

Congestion in China and Southeast Asia

Ports in China and Southeast Asia are also experiencing rising congestion due to increased volumes and geopolitical tensions. The Red Sea crisis has intensified these bottlenecks and caused ships to reroute, leading to significant delays and extended waiting times at these key logistic hubs. These delays are disrupting schedules and adding to the operational challenges for shipping companies.

Panama Canal Drought

Environmental factors are also playing a crucial role in disrupting global logistics. The historic drought at the Panama Canal has significantly impacted global shipping. The lowering of water levels is restricting the number of vessels that can transit through the canal and the amount of cargo they can carry. Despite the efforts to manage water usage and maintain operations, the lingering impact of the drought continues to challenge the logistics sector. This has forced shipping companies to seek alternative routes, further complicating global supply chains.

Conclusion

The overlapping of these issues highlights the fragility of international supply chains and the need for adaptive strategies in logistics. From regulatory impacts and geopolitical tensions to environmental challenges, the logistics sector must navigate a complex landscape to maintain the flow of goods worldwide. As these difficulties persist, supply chain stakeholders must collaborate and innovate to tackle them and ensure global logistics sustainability.

On June 25, 2024, the Western U.S. Agricultural Trade Association (WUSATA) successfully hosted the Product Demonstration and Promotion event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The event aimed to introduce new food and agricultural products from the West to the growing Vietnamese market.

A highlight of the event was the promotional showcase, attended by key importers, distributors, and media representatives. Featuring local chefs, the promotion not only demonstrated the versatility and quality of Western products but also allowed attendees to sample the dishes, creating a memorable and engaging experience. These culinary dishes ranged from traditional Vietnamese cuisine with a Western twist to purely Western-style dishes, catering to the diverse palate of the local market. Suppliers, wholesalers, and agricultural experts also had the opportunity to network and learn more about each other’s market needs and preferences during the event.
